The Science

Goodguts is a powerful probiotic in a cup of tea

That’s right, although adding probiotics to a hot beverage may seem counterintiutive, goodguts is a patented vegan probiotic that differentiates itself from other products by its ability to survive manufacturing processes, shelf life, stomach acids and intestinal bile – to reach your gut alive.

What’s great about goodguts probiotic is – it’s 10 times more likely than yogurt cultures to make it to your gut alive and get to work.

goodguts probiotic has been shown to support digestive and immune health, enhance recovery after intense exercise, and enhance protein utilisation including plant proteins.

Research has highlighted that when goodguts probiotic is consumed daily, it creates a healthier intestinal environment, supports digestive and immune function, and enhances protein utilisation.

Once in your gut, goodguts probiotic produces lactic acid bringing balance back to your microbiome supporting good bacteria you already have in your gut while displacing harmful or ‘bad’ bacteria.

This means all your wellbeing efforts are supported by a gut microbiome that is in balance.

I’ve heard about Probiotics – what are they?

Probiotics are “good”, “friendly” or “healthy” bacteria that when ingested in adequate amounts may help support good health.

Or as The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes it – probiotics are live micro-organism that “….when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”.

Not all probiotic strains are the same.  Different strains offer different benefits and some probiotic strains survive manufacturing, shelf life and digestive transit better than others.  goodguts probiotic survives to reach your gut alive.

goodguts Probiotic Tea has been tested to ensure a minimum of 1 billion cfu in every cup of tea.

Many probiotics are destroyed by stomach acids so don’t make it to your gut alive or in the numbers that your gut needs to operate optimally.  goodguts probiotic makes it to your gut alive to bring balance back to your microbiome by producing lactic acid which supports good bacteria you already have in your gut while displacing the harmful or ‘bad’ bacteria that can lead to tummy troubles.

Gut health is quickly becoming a health priority for many Australians.  There is an increased focus on probiotics being a part of the solution, but some popular probiotic offerings are incompatible with many Australian diets and health requirements.  Some people require a novel solution. That’s goodguts.

What about Prebiotics & Fermented Foods?

You may have also heard about how prebiotics are good for gut health.  Prebiotics are food for our good gut bacteria. – they nourish the gut bacteria.  They are specific types of fibre, nondigestable carbohydrates in our food, that our gut cant digest but feeds the bacteria in our gut.  Some people find that prebiotics can cause symptoms like wind and bloating.

Fermented foods are a component of most traditional diets.  Fermented foods can be made at home easily and include yogurt, sauerkraut kimchi, kefir and kombucha.  Eating fermented foods, once your gut is healed, is a key component to health and wellbeing as fermentation makes their nutrients more available to our body.  Consuming fermented foods and prebiotics along with goodguts probiotic will help your gut digest everything more effectively and potentially increase the diversity of your gut microbiome over time

But you may find you have trouble digesting prebiotics and fermented foods.  The low FODMAP diet restricts the intake of many high prebiotic foods which have a history of causing tummy upsets (like onions and garlic).

Taking goodguts probiotic may help alleviate some of your gut symptoms while you are healing your gut and getting your gut back into balance.

Good Gut Health

Our digestive system is amazing.  Our gut is our second brain. It keeps us healthy with over 70% of our immunity residing in our gut.  Our gut affects everything from cognitive function to our mood, it signals for the release of serotonin more than our brain does.

A busy lifestyle, illness, travel, and stress can decrease good gut bacteria and invite unfriendly bacteria and yeasts into our bodies, resulting in irritable bowels, digestion issues, allergies, inflammation, anxiety, belly pain, and bloat.

From the day you were born, your digestive tract has been exposed to a steady stream of bacteria – some helpful, some unhealthy.

Over time, many factors – a busy lifestyle, illness, travel, a poor diet, or stress can upset your gut and disrupt your guts bacteria balance -inviting unfriendly bacteria and yeasts into our bodies,  leading to irritable bowels, digestion issues, allergies, inflammation, anxiety, belly pain, wind, and bloating.

When your gut is in balance it supports your brain, your immune system, and it has been linked to healing many conditions from nasal congestion to acne.

So Probiotics may help with Gut Health?

Having your gut microbiome in balance allows the good bacteria to outnumber the bad alleviating gut symptoms.  Probiotics are key to intestinal health in maintaining a balance of these helpful and harmful bacteria particularly during periods when our lifestyle is stressed.

Science is now providing increased evidence of the role our gut health plays with many diseases and conditions and how adding a daily probiotic to your diet helps support your gut microbiome back to balance.

Goodguts has one billion cfu of gut loving probiotic in every cup

goodguts Probiotic Tea has been laboratory tested in the USA to ensure you receive 1 Billion CFU probiotic in every cup of tea. Research shows that 1 Billion CFU of Bacillus coagulans provides the optimum health benefit. Many other tablet based probiotics claim higher numbers, but these numbers are not related to survivability or improved effect.

This study discusses evidence for Bacillus coagulans effectiveness as a therapeutic probiotic and its heat stability overcoming the limitations of other probiotics.

Digestive Health

Your digestive system is an incredibly intricate structure that powers your entire body.  It’s home to 70 percent of your immune system and it’s where nutrients, vitamins and minerals are absorbed.

We all know that an overworked or unhealthy digestive system can make life pretty miserable with too many trips to the bathroom or not enough.  In order to keep these functions running smoothly your digestive system needs a proper balance of good vs bad bacteria.  Supplementing your diet with probiotics, like goodguts, can help support that balance.

Studies have shown that goodguts probiotic survives to germinate in the intestines and reduce abdominal pain and bloating, reduce post prandial gas and even abdominal pain.  In addition to helping you digest food better, goodguts probiotic increased utilisation of consumed nutrients such as protein and minerals.

Bacillus coagulans produce digestive enzymes (Wang & Gu, 2010) that are active under gut conditions (alkaline proteases, etc) and these proteases have been shown to digest proteins more effectively than the endogenous human proteases alone (Minevich et al., 2015).

Bacillus coagulans enhances the health of the cells of the gut lining improving nutrient absorption including minerals, peptides and amino acids by decreasing inflammation and encouraging optimum development of the absorptive area of the villi (Kimmel et al., 2010).

Bacillus coagulans supplementation has been shown to increase population of beneficial bacteria (Nyangale et al., 2014).

In multiple studies goodguts Probiotic supports digestive health when consumed daily.

A Prospective, Randomised, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled, Parallel-group Dual Site Trial To Evaluate The Effects Of A Bacillus Coagulans- based Product On Functional Intestinal Gas Symptoms.  BMC Gastroenterology, 2009, 9:85.   Douglas S Kalman, Howard I Schartz, Patricia Alvarez, Samantha Feldman, John C Pezzullo and Dianne R Krieger.

This study looked at the effects on gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with post-prandial intestinal gas-related symptoms (abdominal pain, distention, flatulence) but no GI diagnoses to explain the symptoms.

It concluded that a Bacillus coagulans based product was effective in improving the quality of life and reducing GI symptoms in adults with post-prandial intestinal gas-related symptoms (abdominal pain, distention, flatulence) but no GI diagnoses.

The results show the potential of the probiotic to aid in protein digestion and in the digestion of lactose and fructose.  The importance of the findings: the potential of the probiotic to aid in the digestion of lactose and fructose could be used to prevent occurrence of intestinal symptoms in individuals sensitive to these carbohydrates.

Bacillus Coagulans Significantly Improved Abdominal Pain And Bloating In Patients With IBS.  Postgraduate Medicine, 2009: 121(2): 119-124. Larysa Hun.

Symptoms of IBS can have a profound impact on emotional health and quality of life, and current treatments are sometimes unsatisfactory for patients.  Probiotics, which can normalise gastrointestinal microflora, may alleviate symptoms of IBS.

This study showed statistically significant improvement for abdominal pain and bloating.  Results suggest that the patented Bacillus coagulans may be a safe and effective option for the relief of abdominal pain and bloating for patients with IBS.

Bacillus Coagulans Modulates Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in Older Men and Women.  The Journal of Nutrition May 2015 Edna P Nyangale, Sean Farmer, Howard A. Cash, David Keller, David Chernoff, and Glenn R Gibson.

Advancing age is linked to a decrease in beneficial bacteria and reduced aspects of innate immune function.  Daily consumption of the patented bacillus coagulans by adults aged 65-80 can increase beneficial groups of bacteria in the human gut and potentially increase production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.  This study shows the potential benefits of a probiotic to improve dysbiosis via modulation of the microbiota in older persons.

Effects of probiotics on the fecal microbiota of elderly volunteers after dietary supplementation of the patented Bacillus coagulans.  Anaerobe Volume 30 201  Edna P. Nyangale et al.,

In advancing age, gut populations of beneficial microbes show a marked decline.  This contributes to an environment less capable of maintaining homeostasis.  This study investigated the possible synergistic effects of probiotic supplementation in modulating the gut macrobiotic enabling prebiotic therapy to elderly persons.

In a validated large intestinal model, it was demonstrated that there is an increased effect of elevated populations of beneficial genres of bacteria as well as organic acid production when consuming prebiotics along with the patented Bacillus coagulans versus prebiotics alone.

Immune Health

A large majority of the body’s immune system is located within the intestines.  When goodguts probiotic is consumed daily, it creates a healthier intestinal environment, supporting Immune function.

Studies have shown that when the body is challenged (by colds and the flu for example) goodguts probiotic helps up regulate the protective cytokines which help fight the challenge.  When the body is challenged by over active cytokines (inflammation related to arthritis, for example) it helps down regulate these cytokines.

This research showed that a primary mechanism of action of the patented bacillus coagulans metabolites involves support of more mature phenotypes of antigen presenting cells, important for immunological decision-making.

A patented strain of Bacillus Coagulans Increased Immune Response to Viral Challenge. Postgraduate Medicine, 2009; 121(23): 114-118. Mira Baron.

Viral respiratory tract infection is the most common illness among humans.  Probiotics have been known to enhance the immune system and may represent therapeutic advancement for treating viral respiratory tract infections.  This study showed that Bacillus coagulans may be a safe and effective therapeutic option for enhancing T-cell response to certain viral respiratory tract infections.

Exercise & Muscle Recovery

Protein supplementation improves recovery and training adaptions, resulting in an increase in lean body mass with subsequent greater gains in strength and power (Campbell et al, 2007)

Microbiota composition and diversity positively correlates with protein intake and exercise and is linked to a more favourable inflammatory and metabolic profile.

While moderate exercise intensity reduces infection risk, high intensity exercise actually increases infection risk.  Immune suppression in athletes worsens by psychological stress, environmental extremes, exposure to large crowds, or increased exposure to pathogens due to elevated breathing during exercise (Neiman, 1997).

Probiotics have been reported to reduce the number, severity, and duration of upper respiratory infections and GI distress in athletes (Gleeson et al., 2011; Salarkia et al., 2013; Haywood et al., 2014; Cox et al., 2010).Probiotic Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 reduces exercise-induced muscle damage and increases recovery. (PeerJ, July 2016. Ralf Jäger, Kevin A. Shields, Ryan P. Lowery, Eduardo O. De Souza, Jeremy M. Partl, Chase Hollmer, Marin Purpura and Jacob M. Wilson

This research examined the effect of administration of protein and Bacillis coagulans probiotic on muscle damage, and performance following a damaging exercise bout. The results provide evidence that Bacillus Coagulans supplementation in combination with protein tended to reduce muscle damage, improves recovery time, and prevented the decline in peak power maintaining physical performance subsequent to damaging exercises – as measured by a reduction in muscle swelling, reduction in blood creatine kinase levels, decrease in soreness, increase in perceived recovery, increase in power and an increase in amino acid levels.

Combined effect of Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 and HMB supplementation on muscle integrity and cytokine response during intense military training.  (Yftach Gepner, Jay R. Hoffman, Elad Shemesh, Jeffrey R. Stout, David D. Church, Alyssa N. Varanoske, Hila Zelicha, Ilan Shelef, Yacov Chen, Hagai Frankel, and Ishay Ostfeld . 1 JUL 2017)

The purpose of this study was to compare the coadministration of the probiotic Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086 (BC30) with β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) calcium (CaHMB) to CaHMB alone on inflammatory response and muscle integrity during 40 days of intense military training. Results provide further evidence that the combination of the probiotic BC30 with CaHMB may be more beneficial in maintaining muscle integrity during intense military training.

Enhanced Plant Protein Absorption

Bacillus coagulans BGI-30, 6086 increases plant protein digestion in a dynamic, computer-controlled in vitro model of the small intestine. D. Keller et al. Beneficial microbes 2017.

This research assessed the potential of Bacillus coagulans to aid in protein digestion of plant proteins – pea, soy and rice.

Bacillus coagulans increased protein digestion and uptake in the upper GI tract, which reduced the amount of protein that would be delivered to the colon, which could be fermented into toxic metabolites by the gut microbiota. The enhanced proteins digestion by the patented bacillus coagulans showed a dual benefit: enhanced amino acid bioavailability from plant proteins in the upper GI tract, and a healthier environment in the colon.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Lactic acid producing bacteria (such as Bacillus coagulans) probiotics demonstrate immunomodulating and anti inflammatory effects and the ability to lessen the symptoms of arthritis in humans.

Bacillus Coagulans: A Viable Adjunct Therapy For Relieving Symptoms Of Rheumatoid Arthritis According To A Randomised, Controlled Trial. BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine 2010, 10:1. David R Mandel, Katy Eichas, Judith Holmes.

The results of this pilot study suggest that adjunctive treatment with Bacillus coagulans probiotic appeared to be safe and effective for patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis. The trial results showed that Bacillus coagulans improved pain symptoms and increased mobility in subjects with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Safety

The patented Bacillus coagulans has undergone extensive published safety testing and has been proven safe even when consumed at levels that far exceed standard food product inclusive levels (Endres 2009, Endres 2011).
